Lenin at the Proms

This evening's Prom, in which the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra - comprising musicians from Arab lands, Israel and Spain - played Mozart and Mahler 1 (a good place to start), came just ahead of a key day in the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.

Next week, the orchestra plays in Ramallah.

Comrade Lenin was suspicious of the power of great music to bring people together, preferring what he deemed unsentimental hard headed scientific socialism. The results were catastrophic.

I'll go with the music, with all the passion and intelligence it represents.
